What is the Blue Book: Copernicus for a Sustainable Ocean?

The Blue Book mockup

The Blue Book “Copernicus for a Sustainable Ocean” promotes and tells the story of the Copernicus Marine Service, which has been implemented and operated by Mercator Ocean International since 2015, and how it benefits society as a whole. The Blue Book is a report to inform all European citizens including policy-makers, students and youth. Among its contributors are decision-makers, entrepreneurs, experts, concerned citizens, and scientists from all over the world that are directly involved in ocean-related issues. They share with the reader factual and easily accessible information on pressures affecting the global ocean and the subsequent impacts on the Earth’s climate, environment and biodiversity and how they mitigate them by using information and data from the Copernicus Marine Service. Their testimony also highlights the tremendous potential of the ocean for the blue economy, education, etc. and the way it can be harnessed by using information and data from the Copernicus Marine Service.

Page by page, the Blue Book reader is led to understand the impact and benefits of the Copernicus Marine Service,   across six themes: a Healthy Ocean, a Safe Ocean, a Living Ocean, a Powerful Ocean, The Ocean Climate, and an Inspirational Ocean. The Book provides answers to questions such as “How does the Copernicus Marine Service help to fight against pollution from plastic, oil or toxic algae? How does it help Member States to monitor European policy indicators? How does it contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals? How does it help shipping companies to reduce their fuel consumption and CO2 emissions?  How can one describe the impact of climate change on the ocean? How does the Copernicus Marine Service help to explain to young people how the ocean works?”

The answers to these questions and much more information can be found in the Blue Book on the 19th of November!
