Canada’s global ice-ocean prediction system is now operational

Environment Canada and Mercator Ocean joined in a cutting-edge scientific collaboration for data assimlation and “ocean-ice” modeling domains thanks to a memorandum of understanding led by Meteo France.

One of the missions of the Canadian Ministry “Environment Canada” is to predict weather conditions on a daily basis and to provide detailed predictions to its citizens. In 2004, Environment Canada and Mercator Ocean joined in a cutting-edge scientific collaboration for data assimlation and “ocean-ice” modeling domains thanks to a memorandum of understanding led by Meteo France.

11 years later, on August 20th 2015, Environment Canada launches its operational ice-ocean prediction system. This service is based on a Global ice-ocean prediction system (GIOPS). GIOPS provides global  analysis and predictions of the ocean and the marien ice on a daily basis over the course of 10 days. It assimilates satellite observations (sea height anomaly, sea surface temperature) and in situ (temperature and salinity). Mercator Ocean contributed to this success thanks to its skills and expertise about ocean assimilation and modeling.
